How to measure a Turnbuckle
Turnbuckles are a "must have" for your wrestling or boxing ring. Your ring will have turnbuckles in each corner for each rope. Additionally, you will have turnbuckles under your ring attached to the tensioning cables.
When replacing a turnbuckle, it is important to know the size that you need. This is a question that almost every customer asks us, when they need to get new turnbuckles. What size?
Most everyone will measure a turnbuckle incorrectly. It is very easy to do that.
First, you need to know the diameter of the threaded rods. This is almost always part of the turnbuckle. Just look at either end, on one side or the other, and you will see a 1/2" or a 5/8" diameter marking. There are many different sizes of turnbuckles, but for wrestling and for boxing, 1/2" x 5/8's are the most common.
Now, you need to know the length. Do you just measure from end to end? No, that is not correct.
Turnbuckles are measured only in the center "take up portion". If you look closely at a drop-forged turnbuckle, you see that at each end of the take up portion there are actually threaded NUTS. One end will be threaded to turn to the RIGHT, when tightening the turnbuckle, and usually has an "R" as a marking while the other end is threaded to turn to the left and has an " L" marking. Turnbuckles are measured in the “take up area’ and not the entire length.
The above shows the TAKE UP portion of a turnbuckle. You will measure just that.
Measure from the inside of the “nut” to the other (inside area) nut. A 6” turnbuckle will measure 6”. A 9” turnbuckle will measure 9”, and a 12” turnbuckle will measure 12”.
That measurement will tell you the proper size turnbuckle to order.

How to measure your ring's size
What size mat cover do I need to order? What size ring ropes will fit my ring? How do I know what size ring skirts to buy?
These are just a few of the questions that we are asked on a regular basis.
In a gym, especially, where you have had your ring assembled for several years it is easy to forget what size it is.
In the boxing world, a lot of the "old-timers" will refer to a ring's size by the area INSIDE the ring ropes. This is NOT how rings are actually measured.
For example, a 20' boxing ring will have 16' INSIDE the ring ropes. If you order a 16' canvas or ropes to fit a 16' ring, etc. it isn't going to work!
All rings, boxing, wrestling, etc. are measured by the size of the PLATFORM, edge to edge. It is easy to measure your ring with a tape measure. Go to the center of the ring and measure from edge to edge. See below.
In the above illustration, the ring is 20'. The area inside the ring ropes is not the ring's size. It is the actual size of the platform.

HOW TO TIE DOWN YOUR RING CANVAS
In the old days, everyone seemed to want to "lace" the canvas down. This is a bit time consuming, and it also forced them to pull very hard on the grommets, sometimes pulling the grommet out.
There is a faster, easier, and better way to tie down your ring's canvas.
In the drawing below, you see one side of the ring with only three (3) short pieces of tie down rope, using 6 grommets. This is much faster and much easier than lacing every grommet. You can get your ring's canvas just as tight, in a shorter time.
Monster always provides the tie down rope for your canvas in 100' coils. Cut pieces of the tie down rope into 16- to 18-inch-long pieces, as you need them.
Start in the CENTER of each side. Tie one end of the rope to a grommet that is to the left or right of the center grommet. Then wrap the rope around the bottom tie down bar and back up to the grommet next to the center grommet. Tie it tightly but be sure you can untie this side later.
NOTE: When you are ready to take the ring down, or remove the canvas, you will only need to untie one end of each rope, making the take down and the next assembly even faster.
Next do the same thing in the corners, as shown. This should have one side tied down and you will next move to the OPPOSITE side of the ring and do the same thing. On the opposite side of the ring, be sure to first pull out all wrinkles so the mat cover will be flat and wrinkle free.
Now, with two sides tied down, you will tie down the two remaining sides. Again, make certain that you pull out any wrinkles and have a smooth mat cover. Wrinkles in a mat cover can be dangerous to the participants in the ring.
NOTE: When pulling the wrinkles out and getting the mat cover tight, do not use the rope and pull on the grommets. You should physically grab hold of the canvas itself and pull it, not the grommets.
If you have a very large ring and see a spot with wrinkles that are difficult to get out, you can always add another tie down spot. In most cases 3 tie down spots are sufficient to get a good tight, smooth and wrinkle free mat cover.
NOTE: If your ring has a cable around it, rather than a tie down bar, tighten the cable very tightly and tie down to the cable in the same manner as illustrated above.
